Mobile phones could go dark across Europe in the coming months if power cuts or energy rationing disrupt parts of mobile networks in the region.

Russia’s decision to cut off gas supplies via Europe’s key supply route following the conflict in Ukraine has increased the risk of power shortages.

In France, the situation is aggravated by the shutdown of several nuclear power plants for maintenance.

Industry officials say they fear a harsh winter could test Europe’s telecoms infrastructure, forcing companies and governments to try to mitigate the impact.

Currently, there are not enough backup systems in many European countries to deal with widespread power outages, four telecoms officials said, raising the prospect of mobile phone blackouts.

European Union countries, including France, Sweden and Germany, are trying to ensure the continuity of communications even if power cuts eventually exhaust the backup batteries installed on the thousands of cellular antennas spread over their territory.

Europe has almost half a million telecom towers, and most of them have backup batteries that last around 30 minutes to operate the mobile antennas.

France in negotiations with the distributor

In France, a plan proposed by the electricity distributor Enedis provides for power cuts of up to two hours in the worst case, said two sources familiar with the matter.

General blackouts would only affect certain parts of the country in turn. Essential services such as hospitals, police and government would not be affected, the sources said.

Capitec Bank’s customer base grew to 19 million in the six months ended August 2022, an increase of 13%.

Reporting its half-year results, the Bank said pre-tax operating profit rose 17% to R5.894 billion (from R5.042 billion in the prior period).

Overall earnings per share rose 17% to 4,034 cents per share.

Over the past 5 years, our compound annual growth rate has been 17% despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest and KwaZulu-Natal flooding. This demonstrates the underlying resilience of our business and the quality of our earnings.

However, Capitec’s share price crashed on its results.

Capitec declared a gross interim dividend of 1,400 cents per common share.

Bruce Whitfield interviews Gerrie Fourie, CEO of Capitec Bank.

Fourie says Karin Richards is right, to some extent, when she says the Bank is “just too expensive,” but adds an endorsement.

Still, we think when you look at 19 million customers, if we can leverage that customer base, there’s a lot of potential. I also think there is a lot of potential on the investment banking side… And then this week we launched Capitec Connect.

Gerrie Fourie, CEO – Capitec Bank

What exactly does Capitec do when it talks about optimizing its customer base?

10.8 million of those 19 million customers are on our digital platform are on our digital platform, which is very positive. Then we have 5.6 million customers who are what we call “quality banking customers”… his pay goes down, he has debit orders and he does the transaction from the app…

Gerrie Fourie, CEO – Capitec Bank

So how do you grow those 5.6 million quality customers to 6/7/8/9 million, and even how do you push those digital customer numbers forward…and then how do you make sure customers embrace our full suite of products.

Gerrie Fourie, CEO – Capitec Bank

We are quite satisfied with the results. We are satisfied with our fundamentals and believe that there are prospects for the future.

As Rivian ramps up production of the R1T, R1S, and EDV, the company obviously needs to step up its service game.

As with other electric vehicle startups, including Tesla, Rivian has several ways to service the vehicles it sells across the country: the traditional way via its service centers, via mobile service vehicles that can come to the owner wherever he is, and via over-the-air (OTA) software updates, depending on what needs to be done on the car.

Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe previews the company’s new electric vehicle service fleet in the latest video he posted to Twitter. Shot at the service center in Costa Mesa, California, the video reveals a small fleet of R1T and EDV service vehicles equipped with all the tools needed to repair Rivian electric vehicles.

RJ introduces viewers to Phil, who is the most appropriate person to talk about Rivian’s service vehicles as he led the development team behind them. It starts with the Rivian van, and it’s interesting to see it with a different paint scheme than Amazon uses.

As expected, the Electric Delivery Van is an ideal service vehicle, boasting tons of space for all sorts of diagnostic and repair tools, including wheel and tire equipment and a crane that allows technicians to lift heavy objects in and out of the van.

The EDV also has several clever storage spaces for heavy items, including a floor compartment and a swiveling jack stand. It’s a pretty neat service vehicle overall.

The video then introduces the R1T service truck, designed to reach customers even in the most remote locations, thanks to its off-road capability. Phil says Rivian tried to pack much of the same gear found inside the service van, using the electric truck bed (which has four spare wheels in this case), the tunnel of transmission and the rear seating area which has been converted into a cargo area.

We imagine Rivian also makes good use of the R1T’s frunk, although we don’t see it opening up in this video.

In short

  • Nova Labs and T-Mobile have teamed up to launch Helium Mobile, a 5G wireless service for smartphones.
  • It will use Helium’s decentralized and encrypted 5G network as well as T-Mobile’s network, and switch between the two as needed.

Crypto-powered wireless network Helium will soon be able to showcase its 5G mobile vision to many more users. Today, Helium Network founder Nova Labs announced that it has partnered with T-Mobile to create a new 5G wireless service called Helium Mobile.

Helium Mobile will be a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service and will operate both the T-Mobile and Helium networks for customers in the United States. Scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2023, the service will leverage both T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network and Helium user-operated 5G nodes.

T-Mobile and Nova Labs signed a five-year deal to power the service.

By combining networks and switching between the two as needed, Nova Labs says the service will offer two important economic differentiators from traditional services: plans will start at just $5 per month, and users can also potentially earn rewards. cryptographic tokens for data sharing.

Boris Renski, co-founder and CEO of Nova Labs-owned firmware and hardware maker FreedomFi, said using Helium’s decentralized 5G network, which includes more than 4,500 active nodes operated by the user at present, which means that Nova does not have to invest in capital expenditure to build infrastructure.

“It allows us to build a cellular network with absolutely disruptive economics,” he said. Decrypt.

In addition to this, Helium Mobile will allow users to choose to receive the network’s MOBILE token rewards in exchange for providing anonymized data about their network usage. Renski said the service will treat these users as contributors, as the data will be used to monitor the quality and availability of the network as it evolves, but that’s purely optional.

Helium is a network of decentralized wireless hotspots that incentivize users with cryptographic tokens to run a node and take over the network. The initial Helium network, focused on powering Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as sensors and trackers, has more than 950,000 node operators now.

The 5G network is newer and so far has far fewer users, as 5G hardware is also currently much more expensive than the nodes that support the original IoT network. In June, the Helium Foundation revealed plans to create the original HNT Reward Token and create a new token for each networkto support other wireless protocols in the future.

How it works

Helium’s own 5G network will be Helium Mobile’s preferred network when coverage becomes available, Renski said. It’s a relatively small network right now, but it’s growing: Helium’s second network has taken shape since the launch of MOBILE Token Rewards, with over 1,700 new user nodes activated over the past few years. Last 30 days – and Renski said the pace is picking up.

Initially, voice calls will take place entirely on T-Mobile’s network, while data transfers will use the service provided by node operators in the decentralized network, where available. Otherwise, it automatically falls back to T-Mobile’s network. As Helium’s network grows, more of the load will be shifted from T-Mobile’s infrastructure.

There’s still work to be done in the coming months to make the automated switching process more seamless, Renski said. Decrypt. Initially, users may experience small delays when their smartphone switches between networks, but Nova Labs and T-Mobile will continue to work together to reduce and potentially eliminate these discrepancies over time.

“I would say we’re maybe halfway through that journey at this point,” Renski said of the refinement of the technical infrastructure. “But we still have some way to go to ensure that all users have a smooth user experience.”

Additionally, Nova Labs is working with smartphone manufacturers to design phones specifically designed to enable seamless switching. Users will also be able to bring their own phone, but a press release suggests that Helium-certified phones will be “more efficient” at validating network coverage and thus be able to earn more MOBILE token rewards.

Helium Mobile’s news follows the launch of a proposal to move the network from its own custom blockchain to Solana, a burgeoning blockchain platform for apps, DeFi, and NFT. Token-based voting is set to end on September 22, with an overwhelming majority of users vote in favor of the proposal at the time of this writing.

One of the worst parts of owning a vehicle is when it eventually needs fixing. Whether it’s a tire rotation or new brakes, it can take hours out of your schedule.

But what if a company can bring you the service?

In a new video on Twitter, Rivian Automobile Inc. SHORE CEO RJ Scaringe showcased some of the company’s mobile service vehicles.

The first is Rivian’s service van. The vehicle is equipped with the most common service tools placed in the front for the convenience of technicians. A rear crane can help move heavy loads in and out. A tire replacement kit allows Rivian to come to you and balance a new set of tires and wheels if needed.

Rivian also repurposed one of its R1T electric vans to help with its mobile service efforts. The entire rear seat appears to have been removed for maximum use of space so it can carry almost anything needed to service a customer’s vehicle in the field.

US automaker Rivian is rolling out a new fleet of all-electric mobile service vehicles to support the growing number of R1T pickup trucks and R1S SUVs on US roads. In addition to the images we’ve captured below, you’ll see a video posted by CEO RJ Scaringe, showing Rivian Vans and R1T outfitted with a range of mobile service gear.

Rivian ($RIVN) is a young electric vehicle automaker that is still looking to gain a foothold in an ever-growing electric vehicle market. After a massive IPO last fall, the company released its first two flagship models – the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV, which recently began deliveries to customers.

Long before the R1T began production last year, we reported that Rivian had decided to go with a mobile service fleet to support its EV customers based on app-based scheduling. Similar to its American rival Tesla, Rivian’s electric service vehicles can come to you wherever you are.

At the time, Rivian said those support vehicles would be its all-electric vans, backed by more than 40 planned service centers across the United States and Canada. Last summer, we shared plans for one of these service centers in Costa Mesa, Calif., where Rivian is showcasing its new fleet of electric service vehicles today, and it includes more than vans.

RJ Scaringe shares his take on Rivian’s new electrical services fleet

In addition to the images captured by Electrekof Seth Weintraub seen above, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe posted a new video mobile support electric vehicles being assembled at the company’s facilities in Costa Mesa, California.

Based on the video, we learned that the previously announced Vans will be joined by custom R1T pickup trucks equipped with gear to support Rivian customers in the wild…or in their driveways if that’s easier on their schedule.

In the video, a Rivian employee named Phil walks Scaringe through the custom Rivian Van, explaining some of the design that was designed to support fleet drivers and the services they will provide to the growing number of Rivian owners.

This includes everything from wheel and tire replacement equipment, a crane for lifting heavy objects, and all the tools in between. R1T pickups are equipped with sliding drawers in the transmission tunnel, a jack and plenty of storage in the truck bed.

As Rivian increasingly delivers new R1T and R1S electric vehicles (EVs) to buyers, an important part of the customer experience is service. Today, Rivian shared a preview of its mobile service fleet that will be able to provide service to homeowners at home or on the road.

In a video shared by CEO RJ Scaringe, we see that their Rivian EDV (electric delivery van) which is currently used by Amazon has been converted for use as a mobile service van by Rivian technicians.

We also see how they use the R1T electric truck as a mobile service vehicle.

Rivian Service Van

Unlike Amazon vans, the Rivian mobile service van is painted in a cool white color. According to the video, they were developed in close partnership with Rivian technicians, allowing them to build it in the way that best suits their needs.

According to Phil, who tours the service van, the most commonly used tools are stored up front in the cab.

The large space in the back of the van is used to store the rest of the tools, as well as some specialized equipment, including even equipment to change tires on the road.

There is also a crane that allows technicians to lift heavy equipment, such as tire equipment, in and out of the vehicle. The crane also allows Rivian to move equipment inside the van to reconfigure it in the event of a change in service.

Ergonomics were also considered when developing the mobile service van with a rotating arm to store the jack and storage in the floor for heavy items that can be easily reached when standing outside the van .

Rivian Service Truck

Rivian will also use the R1T electric vans as mobile service vehicles.

The R1T’s versatile gear tunnel is used to store a jack and kickstand, while the rear seats are used to store the tools needed by technicians to perform more common and routine repairs on the road.

Rivian has not yet officially delivered any vehicles to Canada, but it is close to reaching this milestone. The company has started hiring for its first service center in Vancouver and is also looking for someone to help customers with new vehicle registrations.
